Back on the River!

Wow!  It's been a while since I actually paddled the MCR, the gang has been out several times this Summer though.  The river has been in pretty good shape this year thanks to Clinton River Canoe & Kayak along with Dale and company helping out!  Some of the recent storms have brought down a tree or two along the way though.  This past weekend a bunch of us did Avon & Livernois to Ryan Road.  The reading on the Auburn gage was 1.6 feet, but it felt lower than that.  We encountered several low areas where you scraped a bit and had to push yourself though, but it felt great to be on the river on such a fine afternoon!

Also this past weekend on Saturday, Clinton River Canoe & Kayak held a "Kayaking 101" session/demo out at Bald Mt. State Recreation area at the beach on Lower Trout Lake.  There were around 25 or 30 people who showed up and many had never sat in a kayak before!  Rene ran the ground show and provided loads of information useful to any newbies interested in kayaking.  I took groups of 10 at a time out and demonstrated some strokes such as the forward, back, side draw, scull, and sweep showing them how to get the kayak to go where they wanted to go.  I also gave some rolling demo's just to show them what can be done!  Everyone did pretty good and no one flipped!  I even let someone try out my whitewater boat and they stayed upright too!  Check the DNR website and info on Bald Mountain for future "101" free demo's like Mushrooming and Archery to name a few.

Since I have not been paddling much I have also not been posting much.  This doesn't mean I'm not out there in spirit and sometimes at events!  I did help shuttle friends at the Paddlepalooza event, they all had a great day on the river for the "race".  Speaking of race, I'm going to vent or rant a little here since this is 'my' blog.  I really wish they would segregate the types of boats for the race.  Like 12 foot and under in one class and over in another.  The long boats really have an advantage with speed on the river and sit on tops have the advantage when the water is low.  There is one guy in particular who has raced for a few years now that uses a 13 foot or so boat and has less than ethical tactics.  This year he made it a point to drift out in front of everyone for the start of the race, so we squirted him with a water blaster as he went by at the start!  They ought to put the short boats in front of the long boats at the start to give them a chance!  Would also make it more interesting.  So that's my 2 cents worth on the Paddlepalooza.

Quick river condition update for the A&L to Ryan section.  First off, the bridge at Dequindre and Avon is closed to traffic as they begin rebuilding it.  Hopefully they will put a turn lane in to help with traffic.  So this means you need to take Hamlin Road to the South or  for the North take Dequndre to Parkdale to Second St. and back over to Rochester or Livernois to get around it.  River wise 3 or so logs were cut out to allow free passage but one large tree down after the Bypass and before Yates Dam has come down from river left to right.  A path was cut through the branches on river right to make the portage easier but get over early because there is a gravel bar directly in front and if you are not to the right you can get swept into the jam.  A little woody debris management was performed between Yates and Ryan so there should not be any portages there, but as always look ahead and be careful.  The take out under Ryan bridge on river left is muddy as usual but 3 12" patio stones were put into the bank to help get up and it does help!

Here are some pictures from the Paddlepalooza and this past weekend.

Spring Fling

We were planning to paddle from Yates to Van Dyke/Heritage today but due to a snafu on the put in we launched from Ryan.  The river was running about average for this time of the year, around 1.8 feet.  Took out at the walking bridge in River Bends park, there is a portage just before the bridge and the bank is muddy!  After that stretch, took a ride up around the Paint Creek for some recon.

The rapid behind Rochester Mills was looking nice for surfing.  The rapid down by the 2nd Street bridge looked a little low.

Here are some pictures from today's adventure.

Spring is here! (?)

Hello it's been while!  Been having technical difficulties and lack of time to work on them or update the blog for quite a while now.  Anyways, according to the calendar, it's Spring!  The water levels on the MCR have been good lately and I finally got on the river last weekend, level was 2.05 on the Auburn Hills "feet" gage.  A group of 8 went from Avon & Livernois to Ryan last Sunday.  We figured Yates might be busy with fishermen so we went the extra half hour to Ryan for our takeout.

The group included Richie G., Lori & Curt, Dale, Jarrett, John B., Rob C. and myself.  Several downed trees were encountered but thanks to Dale none of us had to get out of our boats!  I believe 5 were cut along the way.  The big one after 2nd Street is gone now but it floated down into another log and could be a problem in the future.

The day was actually quite nice and I wore a short sleeved dry top with neoprene shorts, never got cold.  I paddled my little play boat, my Dagger Agent.  It worked out pretty good and my body held up quite well considering some of the issues my shoulder, knee and hip have been giving me!  My shoulder had an injury skiing at Whistler maybe 10 years ago when I landed with it behind and under my body, could not lift my arm for a few days!  I was younger and did not seek medical attention, it is making itself known, the Doc says there is a deposit irritating my shoulder - meds prescribed.  My knee is my "good" knee and there seems to be some slop in there with a ligament flipping over a bone or something!  Cortisone was injected and it already feels better!  (my bad knee has a trimmed meniscus and no ACL!)  I fell on the ice in January, twice, and there is a hairline crack in a bone on my back/hip/pelvis, somewhere down there, saw it in the x-ray!  For that I was prescribed a nasal spray derived from salmon!  Go figure!  We'll see how all this works out, if only I could find the Fountain of Youth!

Anyways, back to paddling!  Curt snagged a snapping turtle!  He is just like that Turtle Man down South we see on TV!  John B. tried to run over a log that was just cut and floating downstream, it broke loose with him on top and he rode it down a bit!  We didn't stop too much on this trip, no fires and not even a stop at Rock Island.

The Maitland river in Goderich Ontario was running very high this past weekend.  Some of our paddlers were talking about heading over but I was not up to the challenge - it was running over 5 feet, probably closer to 6!  We usually used to run it at the 2 to 4 foot range and had lots of fun.  Over 4 feet and it can be a survival run!  I'll have to follow up with Jim McH. and his buddy to find out if they went.

No plans to paddle Easter weekend, but you never know!  Check the Clinton River MI Paddle Page on Face Book for updates on river trips that are planned.  We're trying to get this going where Face Book will be used to post upcoming river trips and then pictures and brief descriptions, then post more detailed river trips and pictures here on the blog.  Also, you may have noticed a few new tabs on the blog for equipment, river routes, etc., plans are to expand those and make them good references for some of the FAQ's on that stuff.

That's all for now, just wanted to get this posted along with some pictures.  Enjoy!

Happy New Year 2014!

Another great New Year's Day MCR event!  Some of us hiked out early to Rock Island and got a 'main' fire going, then we lit another fire about 5 or so feet away to make a nice warm area to stand around the fire.  One fire is just not enough for more than 10 people.  For paddlers we had Dale, Jerry & Renee, Steve, Phil, Jarrett, Tom, Scott and Mike.  Hikers included Rick, Ed, Richey, Lori, Curt, Mona, John, Jim,  Jack and his dog Leroy.  Greg and Chris were out for a run in the snow and also stopped by.

For treats we had shrimp, steak bites, lemon chicken, ham & turkey roll ups, cookies, hummas & chips, roll up sandwiches and a few other things.  Also had a few growlers with us and at times we had to keep the beer defrosted!

The river was running around 1.5, which is a little below normal for this time of year but the entire route from Avon & Livernois to Yates was portage free, other than the dam!  The snow was falling just about the entire time we were out, total accumulation was around 4 inches in that area, but many spots around SE MI/Detroit were getting 6 to 8 inches!

No one swam and everyone enjoyed the treats so it was a great day on the Mighty Clinton River!  The last of us left around 5pm as it was getting dark out.  On the way home Yates cider mill was lit up and looked really cool.  Comments were made that it would probably be a while before the next trip on the river after it warms up a bit!

So, maybe the next update to the blog will be for skiing or hiking around the Mighty Clinton River!
